To mark World Environment Day, the Solid Waste Management Department of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) organized a grand awareness and entertainment-driven campaign at the Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar Auditorium. Held under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally”, the event was graced by the presence of MBMC Commissioner and Administrator Shri Radhabinod A. Sharma (IAS).

As part of the celebration, a capacity-building workshop was conducted specifically for sanitation workers of the city. Noted environmental experts and former BMC officials Anand Jagtap and Satish Bhosale delivered training sessions during the workshop, enhancing the technical knowledge of frontline workers.

🏅 During the program, sanitation inspectors Anil Rathod, Nitin Khair, and Shrikant Paradkar, along with several sanitation staff, were felicitated with certificates for their outstanding contributions to city cleanliness.

📢 A major highlight of the day was the official launch and distribution of eco-friendly “Thaila Bags” as sustainable alternatives to plastic. Public awareness messages about plastic prohibition were amplified throughout the event.

🏆 MBMC also flagged off the Swachh Star Ranking Competition, which will run until July 31, 2025, inviting citizen participation in keeping the city clean. Additionally, officials announced the upcoming rollout of the “Plastic-Free Mira-Bhayander” initiative.

🎨 One of the standout moments included a live artistic performance by renowned artists Annie and Aathon, who used Rubik’s Cubes to create a poster titled “Global Beat Plastic Pollution”, capturing the theme creatively. Their cultural dance presentation on plastic ban themes captivated the audience and drew widespread appreciation.

🎥 The winners of MBMC’s official Reels Competition were also honored with trophies and cash awards by the Commissioner and Additional Commissioner.

📘 Later in the event, the MBMC released two important reports: the Environmental Status Report (2023–24) and the Disaster Management Action Plan, which were unveiled by top dignitaries.

🌱 In his closing remarks, Commissioner Sharma extended greetings on the occasion of World Environment Day. He emphasized,

“Tree plantation should not be limited to today. We must adopt tree care and conservation as a daily habit. Each citizen must recognize their social responsibility and contribute actively toward making Mira-Bhayander a cleaner, greener city.”

Under the leadership of Commissioner Sharma and in collaboration with Making the Difference (MTD) and the General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC-Re), a comprehensive door-to-door waste segregation campaign has been launched.

The campaign aims to achieve 100% waste segregation at the source, starting with a pilot in Wards 10, 11, and 12.

📊 Key milestones so far:

  • Distribution of 2,500 dual dustbins to promote segregation of wet and dry waste
  • Installation of 25 composting tumblers in residential societies to boost household composting and organic fertilizer production
  • Deployment of electric tempos for efficient collection of segregated waste
  • Placement of steel twin bins at 30 key city locations

This initiative sets a model for sustainable solid waste management in Mira-Bhayander.

👥 The event witnessed participation from key dignitaries including Additional Commissioner Dr. Sambhaji Panpatte, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Sachin Bangar, environmental experts, MTD Director Deepak Vishwakarma, MBMC officials, sanitation inspectors, workers, and a large number of engaged citizens.
