236 Smart CCTV Cameras Now Monitor Mumbai Coastal Road For Speeding And Accidents
BMC installs incident detection, surveillance, and number plate cameras to ensure 24×7 traffic safety on 10.58-km sea-facing highway
The Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project, officially named the Dharmaveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, has entered a new phase of intelligent traffic enforcement with the installation of 236 advanced CCTV cameras across its stretch. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the project’s implementing agency, aims to make travel on this newly opened corridor faster, safer, and smarter.
This 10.58-km-long sea-facing highway connects Princess Street Flyover (Shamaldas Gandhi Marg) to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and now hosts four types of surveillance systems:
🔹 1. Video Incident Detection Cameras (VIDS)
Installed every 50 meters inside the twin underground tunnels, 154 VIDS units automatically detect accidents, wrong-way driving, and stalled vehicles, alerting the control room in real time.
🔹 2. PTZ Surveillance Cameras
A total of 71 PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras offer live monitoring with automated focus on incidents identified by the VIDS system. These allow real-time response and zoom-in on traffic events for verification and evidence gathering.
🔹 3. Automatic Traffic Count Cameras (ATCC)
Installed at the entry and exit points of the tunnels, these 4 ATCC cameras track vehicle volume and categorize them by type. This helps BMC assess usage patterns and traffic flow efficiency.
🔹 4. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras
Seven ANPR cameras have been installed to identify vehicles exceeding speed limits, capturing number plates and issuing automated alerts. This system is crucial for curbing rash driving, illegal racing, and noise violations, which have been persistent complaints from local residents.
A Tech-Enabled Safety Backbone
The surveillance grid is designed to assist both BMC and the Mumbai Traffic Police in managing traffic violations, reducing accidents, and enforcing safety standards. With this technology backbone in place, BMC now plans to operate the Coastal Road round the clock.
Officials emphasize that the camera network not only allows rapid emergency response in case of accidents but also acts as a deterrent against speeding, noise pollution, and reckless driving.
The BMC has urged all commuters to strictly follow traffic regulations while using the Mumbai Coastal Road to ensure the success of this modern mobility corridor.
