Thane Launches Live Location Tracking For Land Surveyors
New tech initiative improves transparency in land measurement, brings relief to farmers and citizens
In a move to make land measurement services more transparent and citizen-friendly, the Thane District Land Records Department has introduced a live location sharing system for its surveyors. This new initiative ensures that applicants for land measurement can track surveyor location in real-time, enabling smoother coordination and better predictability of service.
The initiative was spearheaded by District Superintendent of Land Records Nitin Patil, as part of Maharashtra’s ongoing administrative reform drive under the 150-day action plan promoted by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Citizens or farmers who apply for land survey through the department’s online e-survey portal currently receive advance notices regarding when a surveyor will visit the land. However, field-level inefficiencies and communication delays—especially when surveyors arrived late—often led to grievances and confusion among applicants and neighbouring landholders.
To bridge this gap, officials now require surveyors to share their live GPS location via WhatsApp with the concerned applicant, neighbouring stakeholders, and respective office heads before beginning any field visit. This system is being rolled out across all talukas in Thane district.
“This step ensures greater clarity about where the surveyor is and how long they’ll take to reach the spot. Office heads can also monitor daily attendance and on-field activity more effectively,” said Nitin Patil.
The live tracking system is linked to broader digitization efforts, including online mutation applications through the “Ipsit” portal and legal appeal filings via the “Pratyay” platform. All services are integrated under the MahaBhumi portal.
Citizens have been encouraged to actively use these digital tools and avail themselves of streamlined, transparent services that reduce delays and red tape in the land records system.
