Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai Revisits Girgaon School, Credits Teachers for Shaping His Journey

An emotional return to alma mater as India’s top judge lauds Marathi education and foundational values

Mumbai, July 6 – Chief Justice of India, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, made a heartfelt visit to his alma mater, Chikitsak Samuh Shirodkar School in Girgaon, where he spent his formative academic years from primary to secondary education. In an emotional address, Justice Gavai expressed profound gratitude to his teachers, crediting them for the values and confidence that shaped his journey to the country’s highest judicial post.

Accompanied by Maharashtra’s Skill Development Minister and Mumbai Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Justice Madhav Jamadar of the Bombay High Court, and key dignitaries from the school trust including President Kishore Rangnekar, Secretary Dr. Gurunath Pandit, and Principal Sanchita Gawde, the Chief Justice’s presence marked a moment of pride and inspiration for the school.

“Whatever heights I’ve reached today are deeply rooted in the education and values I received in this school,” said Justice Gavai. He recalled how early exposure to elocution competitions and cultural events at the school helped him overcome stage fear and fostered self-belief. “These formative experiences made me who I am today,” he said, encouraging students to cherish similar opportunities.

He underscored the significance of learning in one’s mother tongue, noting that his Marathi-medium education offered clarity and depth in conceptual understanding, alongside deep-rooted moral values. “These values stay with you for life,” he told the students, emphasizing that education should nurture both intellect and character.

During the visit, Justice Gavai personally toured the classrooms, library, and art department, reliving memories and interacting with his childhood classmates. The student-led tribute rendered in his honor deeply moved him, with Justice Gavai describing it as a proud and emotional moment.

His return served not only as a nostalgic journey but also as a symbol of inspiration for aspiring students, showcasing how humble beginnings in public schools can lead to the highest echelons of public service.
