BMC Commissioner Orders Upkeep Of Shivaji Park And Mahim Fort Revival
Bhushan Gagrani engages with locals, stresses on regular maintenance, dust control and civic upgrades at key Mumbai heritage spots
In a proactive civic move, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani visited Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan (Shivaji Park) in Dadar on 29 July 2025, issuing a series of on-ground instructions aimed at improving cleanliness, infrastructure, and heritage upkeep in the iconic area. Gagrani also made a follow-up visit to Mahim Fort, signaling a coordinated urban rejuvenation push.
During his visit, Gagrani interacted with local residents, addressing grievances and suggestions for improving the park’s hygiene, seating facilities, walking pathways, lighting, and dust suppression mechanisms. He emphasized the need for daily maintenance, including repairs to boundary structures (katta), pavement cleanliness, and adequate lighting around public areas to ensure safety and accessibility.
Crucially, BMC is collaborating with IIT-Bombay to implement scientific dust suppression techniques in the dusty grounds of Shivaji Park. Plans include lawn development and improved greenery, aided by technical expertise from IIT. Gagrani assured the public that additional anti-dust measures will be rolled out based on local feedback.
Residents also demanded a return to the original design of the park’s seating wall, replacing the current tiled setup with the older aesthetic. Gagrani responded positively, directing officials to undertake appropriate restorations while ensuring regular structural checks.
Accompanying the BMC chief were local MLA Mahesh Sawant and Assistant Municipal Commissioner of G-North Ward, Vinayak Vispute, underlining political and administrative coordination.
The Commissioner later visited the Mahim Fort, a historic coastal bastion, where he reviewed its structural state and potential for heritage tourism. Calling it an underutilized asset, Gagrani proposed a combined plan for restoration and beautification, with the goal of transforming the fort into a major tourist attraction in Mumbai. He urged integrated planning that balances conservation with public engagement.
These field inspections are part of a broader push to enhance civic engagement and elevate public infrastructure, especially in areas with historical and cultural significance.
