BMC’s G-South Office Wins IGBC ‘Gold’ Certification For Green Practices
Recognised for solar energy, wastewater reuse, LED lighting, and sustainable waste management
The G-South ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been awarded the ‘Gold’ certification by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for its outstanding implementation of sustainable and eco-friendly measures.
This recognition comes under the IGBC’s Green Existing Building Rating System, acknowledging the office’s achievements in areas such as renewable energy adoption, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, efficient lighting, waste segregation, and the use of non-toxic sanitation products. The office has emerged as a model for environmentally responsible governance infrastructure within Mumbai’s civic administration.
Acting under the directives of BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr. Ashwini Joshi, the ward office undertook significant greening initiatives. The concept was originally launched by then Assistant Commissioners Santoshkumar Dhonde and Mridula Ande, and successfully executed under the leadership of current Assistant Commissioner Swapnaja Kshirsagar.
Some of the notable green installations at the G-South office include:
- A 20 kW solar energy plant for clean power generation
- A 10 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for reusing grey water
- A 131 cubic metre rainwater harvesting tank
- Complete conversion to LED lighting throughout the premises
- Water-efficient fixtures with meters installed on each floor
- 100% waste segregation and an on-site organic composting facility
- Use of eco-friendly cleaning agents across the premises
The IGBC, a body under the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), promotes green building practices across India and certifies projects that meet its environmental performance criteria. Its certification levels include Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum — with ‘Gold’ indicating high environmental sustainability and performance.
Speaking about the recognition, Dr. Ashwini Joshi, Additional Commissioner, stated that this certification is a testament to BMC’s sincere efforts toward sustainable urban development. “It is a matter of pride that our administrative buildings are being transformed into green facilities, and that our efforts are being acknowledged by prestigious institutions like IGBC,” she said.
