Commissioner Gagrani Orders Full Operational Readiness of Hindmata, Gandhi Market Pumping Stations
Inspects Monsoon Preparedness at Flood-Prone Areas in Mumbai
Mumbai, June
In a crucial pre-monsoon inspection, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani directed that stormwater pumping stations at Hindmata and Gandhi Market be maintained in peak operational condition to mitigate waterlogging risks in low-lying areas.
The inspection covered potential flood zones and ongoing concrete roadwork projects across the city. Commissioner Gagrani emphasized that pumping stations must function with greater efficiency and instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted operations during peak rainfall periods. “The pumping systems must respond swiftly and reliably during heavy downpours,” he said.
Key Directives Issued:
- Install flow meters at all major pumping stations.
- Standardize pump capacities for uniform output.
- Deploy additional manpower during emergencies.
- Keep standby diesel generators ready to maintain uptime in case of power failure.
- Maintain real-time coordination with BMC’s Disaster Management Department for weather updates.
- Conduct thorough desilting of drains near Chunabhatti railway station to prevent flooding and avoid disruption of Harbour Line suburban services.
Gagrani also reviewed road concretization works at Jain Society Road in Sion and Parelcha Raja Marg in Dadar, instructing officials to ensure that all barricades are removed after project completion, construction debris is cleared, and footpaths are restored for public safety.
Following a review meeting at the F South Ward Office, the Commissioner visited the Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC) and directly interacted with residents. He directed Assistant Commissioners to make regular visits to CFCs and monitor service delivery firsthand.
Present during the inspection were Deputy Commissioner (Zone 5) Devidas Kshirsagar, Assistant Commissioner of L Ward Dhanaji Herlekar, and Assistant Commissioner of F South Ward Mahesh [surname not mentioned].
“The city must be fully prepared. Operational readiness is non-negotiable,” Commissioner Gagrani asserted.
