On June 16, 2025, the first day of the academic year, over 3.5 lakh students from kindergarten to Class 10 studying in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools will receive free educational kits, as per the directives of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani.

These comprehensive kits will include uniforms, notebooks, compass boxes, art supplies, pencils, water bottles, lunch boxes, school bags, shoes, sandals, and socks. In addition, each student from Classes 8 to 10 will receive a modern tablet (tab) for academic use during school hours, promoting digital learning alongside traditional methods.

Since academic year 2007–08, BMC has been running this free educational material distribution initiative to support the academic development of students. This year, under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Amit Saini, the Education Department completed the procurement of educational materials by April itself, ensuring timely distribution.

The distribution drive will be conducted under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner (Education) Dr. Prachi Jambhekar. Materials are being dispatched to all municipal schools across the city, and individual school-level distribution plans have been finalized to ensure smooth execution on the reopening day.

Established in 1907, the BMC’s Education Department currently imparts education in eight languages—Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, English, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The corporation consistently introduces innovative programs aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes, and this free-kit initiative is a key part of that broader mission.

“Receiving the full educational kit on the very first day sparks enthusiasm among students for schooling and learning,” said officials. “It also enables them to plan their academic year effectively.”

The kits, aside from lightening the financial burden on parents, will be complemented by free textbooks provided by the State Government.

To promote digital literacy and exposure to modern educational tools, students of Classes 8 to 10 will also be given access to educational tablets during school hours. These tabs will help students adapt to technology-driven learning. Teachers have been trained to guide students on proper usage of these devices to ensure maximum academic benefit.

The entire operation is being implemented under the leadership of Primary Education Officer Mr. Rajesh Kankal and Secondary Education Officer Mrs. Sujata Khare. Mr. Kankal confirmed that students present on June 16 will receive their kits on the same day, while students returning later will receive their kits on their first day of attendance.
