Mumbai, 10 June 2025 – The core construction of the Kanak Bridge flyover—connecting Masjid Bunder railway station to P. D’Mello Road—has been completed on schedule. Remaining tasks such as lane marking, street lighting, signage installation, and final painting are underway and are expected to be completed within the next four days. The flyover is now nearing readiness for full-scale vehicular movement.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Shri Abhijit Bangar today visited the site to inspect the construction and related auxiliary works. Chief Engineer (Bridges) Shri Uttam Khote and Deputy Chief Engineer Shri Rajesh Mule, along with project engineers, were present during the inspection.

Located in South Mumbai, the Kanak Bridge serves as a crucial east-west connector, linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammed Ali Road. The previous 125-year-old bridge was declared unsafe by the Central Railway administration, which subsequently dismantled the structure in August 2022. To ensure continued connectivity, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook the flyover’s reconstruction, adhering to designs approved by Central Railways.

The key works—RCC deck slabs, asphalt surfacing, and the approach roads from both eastern and western sides—are now fully complete.

  • The total length of the bridge is 328 meters, with a 70-meter stretch directly over the railway tracks.
  • The approach roads built by the BMC measure 230 meters—130 meters on the east and 100 meters on the west.
  • For the over-rail section, two massive steel girders—each weighing 550 metric tonnes, 70 meters in length, 26.5 meters wide, and 10.8 meters tall—have been erected atop RCC piers.

The southern girder was launched on 19 October 2024, and the northern girder was positioned on 26 and 30 January 2025. These complex operations were successfully executed using special blocks coordinated with Central Railway’s transportation and power authorities.

Following the girder installations, precise planning enabled timely completion of the eastern side, from excavation to asphalting, within just four months starting from 2 February 2025. The project’s engineering complexity and tight timelines posed considerable challenges, which the team overcame with technical expertise and coordination.

RITES Ltd., the structural design consultant, has issued the required structural stability certificate.

Other completed works include:

  • RCC deck slab installations on both east and west ends
  • Concreting, mastic asphalt, and noise barrier installations
  • Anti-crash barriers over the railway section

Remaining tasks—including curb painting, directional signage, street lighting, thermoplastic lane markings, and cat-eye reflectors—will be finalized by 14 June 2025.

A comprehensive load test is scheduled for 13 June 2025, with results expected 48 hours later, by 15 June 2025.

Commenting on the project, Additional Commissioner Shri Bangar stated,

With special permissions from the traffic police, the bridge work was carried out 24×7 over the last two months, enabling timely completion of the main structure. Once the load test results are confirmed, the flyover will be opened to vehicular traffic in coordination with VJTI and the traffic police.”

Shri Bangar added,

The first girder was installed on 19 October 2024. Despite seasonal challenges, the engineering team expedited all pending works before the monsoon. The Kanak Bridge was targeted for completion by 10 June 2025, and that milestone has now been achieved.

While footpath work is complete, the sleep road (service ramp) on the western side and related staircases will be constructed post-monsoon.

Key Benefits of the Reconstructed Kanak Bridge:

  • A vital east-west link in South Mumbai
  • Safer and more efficient movement of vehicles between the city’s eastern and western regions
  • Decongestion of traffic on Mohammed Ali Road and P. D’Mello Road
  • Improved access to Girgaon, Chhatrapati Shivaji Market, Kalbadevi, Dhobi Talao from P. D’Mello Road
  • Relief to congested areas such as Yusuf Meherally Road, Mohammed Ali Road, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road, and Qazi Sayyed Street
