Prompt Removal and Disposal of Abandoned and Scrap Vehicles Ordered
– BMC Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani issues directives
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take strict action for ‘Abandoned Vehicle-Free / Obstruction-Free Roads’
Ensuring ease and convenience for citizens is a top priority for the BMC, emphasized Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Mr. Bhushan Gagrani. He stated that there can be no negligence or compromise in this matter. Abandoned and non-functional/scrap vehicles parked along the roadside cause major disruptions to both pedestrian ease and smooth vehicular traffic.
Therefore, the external agency appointed for this task, in coordination with the administrative department-level officials, has been directed to immediately remove and dispose of such vehicles. Along with active efforts for “Abandoned Vehicle-Free / Obstruction-Free Roads,” strict action should also be taken when necessary, Mr. Gagrani instructed.
BMC Appoints External Agencies for Swift Action at Ward Level
To accelerate and intensify the action against abandoned, non-functional, or scrap vehicles in Mumbai, the BMC has appointed external agencies at the administrative ward level starting May 2025. Action is already underway through these agencies and local ward offices.
A review meeting was held today (June 18, 2025) at the BMC headquarters to assess progress, challenges, and solutions related to the ongoing operation. During this meeting, Mr. Gagrani reinforced his instructions.
High-Level Meeting Held to Coordinate and Intensify Action
The meeting was attended by:
– Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Mr. Abhijeet Bangar
– Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mr. Anil Kumbhare
– Deputy Commissioner (Finance) Mr. Prashant Gaikwad
– Special Duty Officer (Commissioner’s Office) Mr. Chandrashekhar Chore
– Deputy Commissioners from various zones,
– Assistant Commissioners from all administrative wards,
– Chief Engineer (Roads & Traffic) Mr. Girish Nikam,
– Deputy Chief Engineer (Traffic) Mr. Mahendra Agrawal, among others.
Public Convenience and Road Clearance Are Non-Negotiable
Mr. Gagrani reiterated that the BMC is committed to ensuring hassle-free roads for Mumbai’s citizens. However, abandoned and non-functional vehicles are causing significant obstructions. Hence, the BMC is actively working toward removing such obstacles.
Although action is already in progress at the administrative level, external agencies have been engaged to accelerate and intensify the process. Mr. Gagrani emphasized that a strong coordination between these agencies and the administrative officers is crucial for immediate vehicle removal and disposal.
He also stated that action must be taken against vehicle owners where applicable. However, the focus is not merely on penalties but on clearing public roads for citizen ease.
Removal of All Types of Unauthorized Waste Urged
In addition to non-functional vehicles, other unauthorized and discarded junk materials should also be immediately cleared. Special drives, in collaboration with the police department, should be launched where needed.
To strengthen coordination among police, contractors, and BMC administration, Mr. Gagrani directed that a Nodal Officer be appointed at each administrative ward level to monitor and coordinate actions related to the removal of abandoned and scrap vehicles.
