Sion Flyover to Be Fully Completed and Opened to Traffic by July 15, 2026
Pedestrian bridge operational; BMC and Railways urged to fast-track parallel works
The reconstruction of the Sion (Shiv) railway flyover, a crucial east–west connector in central Mumbai, is progressing at the desired pace and will be fully completed and opened to traffic by July 15, 2026, senior civic officials have confirmed.
During a site inspection on January 29, 2026, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), directed officials to ensure strict adherence to timelines, seamless coordination with the Railways, and day-to-day on-site monitoring by engineers to avoid any delays.
As part of the project, a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) for pedestrians has already been made operational, enabling safe east–west pedestrian movement. Of the two planned public pedestrian underpasses, one has been completed and is expected to be opened within the next fortnight, significantly easing foot traffic in the busy Sion area.
Bangar stressed that municipal works and railway works must progress in parallel, backed by micro-level planning and high-quality inter-agency coordination between the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Indian Railways. “Daily presence of engineers at the site is non-negotiable. Issues must be resolved immediately, on the spot,” he said.
The Sion flyover reconstruction project aims to reconnect Sion East and West, a corridor that serves as a major arterial link for both local and through traffic. While railway-related works within the rail corridor are being executed by the Railways, BMC is responsible for approach roads and the two public underpasses.
Officials informed that the underpass on Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Road has been completed. Once it becomes operational, pedestrian traffic on the western side of the railway bridge will be reorganised, allowing a larger work zone to be made available for construction activities.
The western side of the flyover has been divided into four distinct construction phases, each with a clearly defined deadline. All western-side works are scheduled to be completed by May 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the Railways are expected to hand over possession of the eastern approach road to BMC by May 31, 2026, after completing critical rail-related activities.
Work is also progressing rapidly on the second pedestrian underpass on the Dharavi side. The northern portion of the old railway bridge has already been dismantled, and dismantling of the southern portion is currently underway. Once girder launching on the northern half is completed, BMC will gain access to half of the eastern approach road, enabling further construction.
According to the plan, the Railways will complete the final girder launching by May 31, 2026. While BMC will finish all western-side works by then, an additional 30 to 45 days will be required to complete eastern-side works, placing the final completion deadline firmly at July 15, 2026.
Bangar underlined that timely availability of girders at the site is critical and called upon both agencies to work in close coordination. “Honest and coordinated efforts between the civic body and the Railways are essential to minimise inconvenience to citizens and restore normal traffic movement at the earliest,” he said.
Senior officials present during the inspection included Uttam Shrote, Chief Engineer (Bridges); Rajesh Mulye; and Rohit Mehla, along with other project engineers.
