Goregaon–Mulund Link Road Project Gains Momentum as Mulund West Flyover Work Accelerates

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar reviews site; key flyover to open in phases to ease traffic congestion

The ambitious Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-led Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project has gained fresh momentum, with construction of the Mulund (West) flyover progressing steadily. Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), conducted an on-site inspection and directed officials to fast-track critical segments to ensure smoother traffic movement.

Under the project, a flyover with an elevated rotary at Guru Gobind Singh Road in the Khindipada area of Mulund (West) and a cable-stayed flyover at Dr. Hedgewar Chowk is being constructed. The flyover stretches 1.89 kilometres from the Tansa water pipeline to the Nahur railway bridge, making it one of the most technically challenging sections of the entire GMLR corridor.

A total of 48 piers have been proposed for the main flyover, of which 39 have already been completed. Similarly, 10 of the 47 spans have been constructed so far. In addition, two smaller flyovers are being built over the Tansa water pipeline on either side of the main structure. Bangar instructed that all works be completed in parallel, with the entire Mulund-side package targeted for completion by June 15, 2027.

Emphasising traffic management, Bangar directed that the northern small flyover over the Tansa pipeline be given top priority and opened to traffic by May 31, 2026, ahead of the monsoon. This, he said, would significantly ease congestion in the area, where traffic is currently being diverted through a narrow underpass due to ongoing construction.

The 12.20-kilometre-long GMLR project, being developed in four phases, aims to provide a direct east–west road connection between the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund and the Western Express Highway at Goregaon. Phase III (Part A) includes the elevated rotary at Guru Gobind Singh Road and the cable-stayed flyover at Dr. Hedgewar Chowk in Mulund (West).

Bangar also reviewed progress at Sonapur Junction in Mulund (West), accompanied by senior municipal engineers and project consultants. He noted that the Mulund flyover is a critical and complex component of the GMLR due to its length and multi-level integration with other transport infrastructure.

Explaining the broader scope of the project, Bangar said the GMLR includes a 4.7-kilometre-long twin tunnel with a 13-metre internal diameter beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, as well as a 1.60-kilometre-long box tunnel through the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari area, along with approach roads. Flyovers are being constructed on both sides of the tunnel alignments.

On the Goregaon side, a 1.26-kilometre-long flyover from near Dindoshi Court to Ratnagiri Hotel Junction is under construction and is expected to be completed by May 31, 2026.

At Dr. Hedgewar Chowk in Mulund, a 120-metre-long cable-stayed bridge—located at the first level below the proposed Mumbai Metro Line 4—is being built. The Mulund flyover package comprises three major components: the main flyover and two smaller flyovers over the Tansa pipeline, with priority currently being given to the northern structure.

Following the site visit, Bangar also inspected the launching shaft excavation for the twin underground tunnels near Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon. Two state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will be used for tunnelling. Excavation of the first phase has been completed, and the process of lowering the TBMs into the shaft is scheduled to begin in March 2026.

The launching shaft measures approximately 200 metres in length, 50 metres in width and 30 metres in depth. While excavation has been completed, work on the TBM cradle is currently underway. For the operation, 800-metric-tonne and 350-metric-tonne cranes are required; the 350-metric-tonne crane has already arrived, while the larger crane is expected by February 22, 2026. Officials expect the TBM launching process to begin in the first week of March 2026.
