Ajit Pawar Sets December 2026 Deadline For First Phase Of GST Bhavan

Wadala Project To Relocate Government Offices From Costly Rented Spaces; Corporate-Style Complex Planned

Mumbai, August 20: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has directed that the first of four buildings at the upcoming GST Bhavan in Wadala be completed by December 2026. Once ready, the facility will house several government offices currently operating from rented premises across Mumbai, reducing costs and consolidating administrative functions.

The instructions came during a high-level meeting at the Deputy Chief Minister’s Secretariat, attended by Finance Department Additional Chief Secretary O.P. Gupta, Planning Department ACS Dr. Rajgopal Deora, PWD ACS Manisha Mhaiskar, and GST Commissioner Ashish Sharma, among others.

Pawar emphasized that the GST Bhavan should be developed on corporate lines, with space allocation strictly as per government rules. He further suggested that once official requirements are met, remaining space could be leased to private firms to generate additional revenue. To ensure transparency in allotment, he ordered the formation of a joint committee comprising the Finance Department, PWD, and GST authorities.

Strategic Connectivity And Facilities

The Wadala site offers excellent transport links, including access to metro and suburban stations, the Eastern Freeway, and the Atal Setu coastal road. The GST Bhavan is expected to span several lakh square feet, accommodating a large number of government departments under one roof.

This project is seen as a key infrastructure move that will not only streamline government operations but also reduce dependence on costly rented properties in Mumbai’s prime business districts.
