Andheri-Ghatkopar Flyover Project: Urgent Rehabilitation for Affected Families Ordered by BMC Chief
Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani Directs Structural Audit and Heavy Vehicle Ban to Ease Congestion
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued urgent directives to rehabilitate all eligible Project Affected Persons (PAPs) displaced by the ongoing Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road (AGLR) flyover construction, being executed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail).
During an on-site inspection on October 9, 2025, BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani instructed officials to expedite relocation of residents and businesses impacted by the project, to ensure the bridge work progresses without delay. He also ordered a structural audit of the existing railway overbridge and temporary restrictions on heavy vehicles, in coordination with the traffic police, to prevent congestion and maintain safety.
The cable-stayed flyover, built in two phases, aims to significantly reduce travel time and decongest the eastern and western suburbs once completed. The project is funded by the BMC while being implemented by MahaRail. Senior leaders including MLAs Ram Kadam and Parag Shah, MahaRail Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, and senior municipal engineers were present during the inspection.
Gagrani emphasized that project timelines must not be extended and that citizens should face minimal disruption. He directed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to prioritize resettlement of affected residents and ensure phased rehabilitation for smooth progress of the construction. Utility lines are to be systematically relocated, and alternative routes must be made available to ease local traffic movement.
Following the site visit, the Commissioner also inspected the ‘N’ Ward Municipal Office at Ghatkopar East and interacted with citizens and staff at the Citizen Facilitation Centre (CFC). He stressed on improving public amenities — including seating, drinking water, barrier-free access, and uninterrupted internet and server operations. Gagrani instructed staff to ensure that citizens should not face delays or unnecessary paperwork in availing municipal services. He also reviewed the token system in use at the center to monitor efficiency and transparency.
