BMC Issues Notices To 3,153 Vehicle Owners For Abandoned And Scrap Vehicles
Over 4,300 Abandoned Vehicles Found Across Mumbai; Nearly 2,000 Already Towed Away
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its drive to remove abandoned, non-functional, and scrap vehicles from public roads to ease traffic movement in Mumbai. As of 12 August 2025, officials identified 4,325 such vehicles across the city, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs. Of these, 3,153 owners have been served notices under Section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, while 1,927 vehicles have already been towed to contractor yards.
Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani is spearheading the campaign, supported by a policy that mandates the removal of derelict vehicles from public spaces. To execute the drive, BMC has engaged M/s IFSO Technology Pvt Ltd for the city division (WhatsApp: 7505123456), M/s Raza Steel for eastern suburbs (WhatsApp: 9819543092), and M/s Pradeep Trading Company for western suburbs (WhatsApp: 8828896903).
The city division recorded 833 abandoned vehicles, issuing notices to 502 owners and towing 147 vehicles. In the eastern suburbs, 1,440 abandoned vehicles were found, with 1,130 notices served and 740 vehicles towed. The western suburbs topped the list with 2,052 abandoned vehicles, of which 1,521 notices were issued and 1,040 vehicles removed.
Under Section 314, vehicle owners have 72 hours to remove their vehicles after receiving a notice. Failure to comply results in towing, and if the vehicle is unclaimed within 30 days, it is scrapped without further claims. Owners wishing to reclaim their towed vehicles must pay the prescribed fine within this period.
The BMC has urged residents to report abandoned vehicles by sending photos and Google location details via the respective WhatsApp numbers, calling the 1916 helpline, or lodging complaints through https://www.mcgm.gov.in. The corporation emphasised that the objective is not merely punitive but aimed at clearing road obstructions for smoother traffic flow.
