Cooper Hospital Launches Gastroenterology OPD For Stomach Disorders
BMC expands specialty medical services to tackle rising digestive health issues
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a dedicated Gastroenterology Outpatient Department (OPD) for stomach-related ailments at Dr. R. N. Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle, starting September 24, 2025.
The initiative was rolled out under the guidance of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) and on the directives of Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Ughade and Director of Medical Education & Major Hospitals Dr. Neelam Andrade.
The new OPD was inaugurated by Dr. Shailesh Mohite, Dean of Nair Hospital and member of Cooper Hospital’s Supervisory Committee. The effort was actively pursued by Dr. Neelam Redkar, Head of Medicine and Postgraduate Dean.
Weekly Specialist Service
The OPD will function every Wednesday from 1 pm to 3 pm. Eminent specialists Dr. Jayant Barve and Dr. Shobhana Bhatia have been appointed as honorary consultants.
- Dr. Barve, a distinguished expert with over four decades of experience, specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal and intestinal disorders.
- Dr. Bhatia, former Head of Gastroenterology at KEM Hospital, brings her rich expertise to Cooper Hospital after retirement.
Their combined knowledge is expected to greatly benefit patients seeking advanced treatment for complex digestive disorders.

With today’s stressful lifestyles and changing dietary habits, cases of liver, stomach, and intestinal ailments are on the rise. The new OPD will enhance diagnostic efficiency, particularly through endoscopy-based investigations, making care more accessible to patients in need.

Importantly, Cooper Hospital has become the first BMC hospital in Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs to introduce such a gastroenterology specialty service.
