Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding In Mira-Bhayandar; Red Alert Issued
Industrial hubs, hospitals and highways hit as city records 277 mm rainfall in 24 hours
Mira Road, August 19 – Two days of relentless rain battered Mira-Bhayandar, leaving several parts of the city waterlogged and prompting authorities to issue a red alert for the next 48 hours.
Flooding was reported across Mira Road, Bhayandar East, Bhayandar West and Kashimira, with water entering homes, shops and industrial units. Near Maxus Mall in Bhayandar West, over two feet of water forced police to barricade the road, halting traffic.
Industrial Losses At Mahesh Estate
At the Mahesh Industrial Estate in Mira Road, water levels rose to four feet, forcing factories to shut and sending thousands of daily wage workers home without pay. Estate Chairman Omar Kapoor said the flooding has persisted for 15 years due to poor road elevation. “Over 1,500 workers lose wages every time this happens. We request the municipal corporation to allow us to raise the ground level by four feet,” he urged.
Hospital, Trees And Traffic Affected
At the Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Hospital, part of the building’s cement grille collapsed, though fortunately no casualties were reported. Fire brigade teams rushed to clear the debris. In Indralok Phase 4 and Kabeen Road, trees were uprooted but quickly removed by the disaster management team.
The Kashimira area was worst hit, with floodwaters entering homes in Meenakshi Nagar and inundating the Kashi Gaon police station premises. At Dahisar Check Naka, waterlogging triggered a massive traffic jam on the highway, with vehicles backed up to Ghodbunder Road along the Western Expressway.
City Administration On Alert
According to the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma personally inspected low-lying areas and instructed ward officers and disaster management teams to stay on full alert.

The Disaster Management Cell is operating 24×7, with citizens urged to call emergency helplines 28117102 / 28117104 / 18002284 / 8291370138 for assistance.
The Meteorological Department confirmed 277 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, with sea waves rising to 3.75 metres, worsening the flooding. With forecasts of two more days of heavy rain, MBMC has advised residents to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary.
