Vidyavihar Flyover to Be Fully Completed by June 25, 2026: BMC Sets Firm Deadline

Eastern arm ready by February 2026, officials push to finish major works before monsoon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a clear and time-bound target to complete all works of the Vidyavihar flyover by June 25, 2026, with a major focus on finishing critical construction well before the onset of the monsoon. The project, aimed at easing east–west connectivity in the Ghatkopar–Vidyavihar belt, is being closely monitored at the highest administrative level.

During a site inspection conducted on January 29, 2026, Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), issued strict instructions to fast-track pending works and remove bottlenecks affecting progress.

The flyover is being constructed within the ‘N’ Ward limits and spans over the railway tracks at Vidyavihar railway station, connecting Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg (East) with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (West). Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve commuter movement between the eastern and western suburbs.

The project has a total length of 650 metres, including a 100-metre main bridge over the railway tracks, a 220-metre eastern approach road, and a 330-metre western approach road. The flyover will consist of two traffic lanes, along with dedicated pedestrian access to the Vidyavihar station platforms. As part of the project, railway ticket counters, the station master’s office, and stairways have also been reconstructed, with pedestrian connectivity integrated into the adjoining service roads.

Officials confirmed that all works on the eastern side are in their final phase. The solid approach road and surfacing of the bridge deck are scheduled to be fully completed by February 28, 2026. On the western side, six pillars have already been erected, while construction of the remaining four pillars, spans, and approach roads is still underway.

One of the biggest challenges, officials noted, is traffic diversion on LBS Road, a major arterial corridor. To address this, instructions have been issued to complete side-road works first, ensuring maximum traffic movement even while construction continues. Additionally, removal of affected residential and commercial structures and finalisation of revised road alignment on the western side are being prioritised to unlock faster progress.

Keeping the monsoon season in mind, all major structural works are to be completed by May 31, 2026, after which surfacing and finishing works will be taken up. “Under no circumstances should the deadline slip,” Bangar stressed, directing officials to ensure the flyover is opened to traffic by June 25, 2026.

Senior officials, including Uttam Shrote, Chief Engineer (Bridges), along with project engineers and civic officers, were present during the inspection.
