KEM Hospital Unveils Upgraded Burn Care Centre With Advanced ICU Facilities

Renovated unit to treat 150–170 burn patients annually, now open to men, women and children

The King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, on December 13, 2025, inaugurated its newly renovated Burn Care Centre, marking a significant upgrade in public healthcare infrastructure for burn victims in the city. The centre was formally inaugurated by Shri Shailesh Limdi, in the presence of senior hospital officials and civic health administrators.

The upgraded Burn Care Centre is now equipped to treat 150 to 170 burn patients annually and, importantly, extends its services to male patients in addition to women and children, expanding access to critical burn treatment services. This development is expected to reduce the burden on emergency services and improve survival and recovery outcomes for burn victims across Mumbai and adjoining regions.

Speaking at the event, Dr. (Mrs.) Sangeeta Rawat, Dean of KEM Hospital, and Dr. Vinita Puri, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, highlighted that the renovation aligns with the hospital’s long-term vision of strengthening specialised trauma and emergency care. Senior department heads and medical staff were also present during the inauguration.

The renovation was carried out following directives from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and Administrator Shri Bhushan Gagrani, who had emphasised the need for modern infrastructure and infection-control measures for burn patients. Additional guidance on preventing hospital-acquired infections was provided by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs). Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Public Health) Shri Sharad Ughade stated that the centre aims to ensure that economically weaker patients receive treatment through various government healthcare schemes, reinforcing the city’s commitment to inclusive healthcare.

The refurbished unit now houses 12 fully equipped beds, including state-of-the-art Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Advanced medical equipment such as ventilators, multi-parameter monitors, dialysis machines, and other modern life-support systems have been installed. These upgrades will allow doctors to manage complex complications commonly associated with severe burn injuries more effectively.

Beyond medical equipment, attention has been given to patient comfort and dignity. The centre features modern furniture, enhanced lighting, and television sets to help reduce patient stress and pain during prolonged treatment. A dedicated treatment layout ensures quick medical intervention, while controlled entry systems minimise infection risks. The design also allows for smooth patient movement, ensuring both safety and efficiency.

Dr. Rawat noted that comprehensive arrangements have been made for patient safety, infection control, and compassionate care. Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Vinita Puri stressed that burn injuries cause not only physical trauma but also deep emotional and social distress. “Our responsibility goes beyond medical treatment. We aim to provide hope, dignity, and humane care in a secure environment,” she said.

The upgraded Burn Care Centre stands as one of KEM Hospital’s most ambitious healthcare projects, reinforcing its role as a leading public medical institution and offering renewed hope to burn survivors across Mumbai.
