MBMC Distributes PPE Kits To Safai Mitras Under ‘NAMASTE’ Scheme
Initiative Aims To Eliminate Manual Sewer Cleaning And Ensure Worker Safety
The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has distributed 116 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to its sanitation workers under the ‘NAMASTE’ (National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem) scheme. Launched by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in 2022, the programme seeks to end hazardous manual sewer cleaning, promote mechanised cleaning equipment, and provide safety gear, healthcare, skill development, and social security to sanitation workers.
MBMC identified and registered its Sewer and Septic Tank Workers (SSWs) in the National MIS system before receiving the kits from the National Safai Karamchari Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC). The distribution event was held on 13 August 2025 at MBMC headquarters in the presence of Commissioner and Administrator Radhabinod A. Sharma (IAS) and Additional Commissioner Priyanka Rajput.
In addition to PPE distribution, MBMC has undertaken regular health check-up camps, safety awareness sessions, and training workshops on safe work practices and mechanised cleaning. Officials emphasised that PPE kit use is mandatory during work to prevent health hazards, warning that non-compliance by workers or contractors will lead to action.
