Mumbai Launches Full Online Fast-Track Marriage Registration Service

Weekend Appointments, QR-Coded Certificates, and DigiLocker Integration to Simplify the Process

Mumbai has taken a major digital leap by launching India’s first fully online fast-track and weekend marriage registration service under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The initiative, operational since 21 September 2025, enables citizens to register marriages even on Saturdays and Sundays through a dedicated online portal — making the process faster, paperless, and citizen-friendly.

Under this new system, couples can apply through the official BMC website for Fast-Track Marriage Registration (Monday–Friday) or Weekend Marriage Appointments (Saturday–Sunday). The entire process — from application to document submission — is now digital, with certificates issued online bearing a secure QR code. Soon, these certificates will also be available via DigiLocker.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani highlighted that the move is part of the civic body’s ongoing digital governance drive to make services accessible, transparent, and efficient. The portal also allows direct upload of documents and couple photographs, eliminating manual visits to ward offices.

Key Highlights of the Online Marriage Registration Service

1️⃣ Weekend & Fast-Track Facility:
Citizens can now plan their marriage registration for Saturdays and Sundays. About 20% of weekday slots are reserved for same-day Fast-Track registrations, allowing couples to receive certificates within hours.

2️⃣ Online Application Portal:
Applications can be filed online at:

Appointments must be booked before 5:00 PM on the previous day for weekend slots.

3️⃣ Fee Structure:
An additional fee of ₹2,500 applies for weekend or fast-track registrations, payable online.

4️⃣ Policy Reforms for Inclusivity:

  • The earlier restriction requiring the marriage to have occurred within Maharashtra has been removed. Couples residing in Mumbai can register even if married elsewhere.
  • Registration is now open to all religions, including Christian, Jewish, and Parsi communities.
  • Sikh couples can register under the Anand Marriage Act, 1909 via the same portal.

5️⃣ Administrative Coverage:
Weekend services operate in 13 ward offices on Saturdays and 12 on Sundays, ensuring citywide accessibility.

6️⃣ Digital Verification & Delivery:
Certificates are emailed directly to applicants after document verification. The QR-coded certificate ensures instant authentication and future DigiLocker linkage.

Why It Matters

This initiative positions Mumbai as a national leader in civic e-governance, reflecting a blend of technology, convenience, and transparency in public service delivery. It simplifies bureaucratic processes and aligns with the government’s broader Digital India and Ease of Living missions.
