Raigad, July 12 – The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is all set to commence its first commercial flight operations by September 2025, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing that the airport will feature the world’s fastest baggage claim system as a marquee facility for passengers.

Inspecting the ongoing works at the airport site, CM Fadnavis confirmed that 94% of the airport construction is complete, and the remaining 6% will be wrapped up in time for the scheduled launch. He was joined by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, former MP Ramseth Thakur, MLAs Prashant Thakur, Mahesh Baldi, and Manda Mhatre, along with senior officials from CIDCO, police, and municipal corporations.

During the review visit, the Chief Minister emphasized seamless passenger convenience, noting that the airport would set new benchmarks in logistics efficiency, terminal operations, and transport connectivity.

Key Project Highlights:

  • NMIAL (Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd.) achieved financial closure on March 29, 2022, with SBI sanctioning ₹12,770 crore as part of a ₹19,647 crore Phase 1 and 2 development budget.
  • CIDCO has invested nearly ₹2,000 crore in land acquisition and rehabilitation, and completed crucial preparatory tasks including 5.5-meter land leveling, relocation of the Ulwe river, and high-voltage transmission lines.
  • As of June 30, 2025, the project has attained 96.5% physical progress, with 13,000+ workers currently deployed. Additional manpower will be inducted to meet the final deadline.
  • On October 11, 2024, the airport witnessed a ceremonial inaugural landing by the Indian Air Force’s C-295 aircraft, followed by flypasts by SU-30s, and later, a successful commercial test landing by IndiGo’s Airbus A320 on December 29, 2024.

Once operational, NMIA will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo annually in its first two phases. The Chief Minister reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had laid the foundation stone for the project, will also be invited to inaugurate the airport.

With CIDCO allocating 1,160 hectares and full right-of-way access granted as of June 2022, the project has now entered its final stretch—readying one of India’s most awaited aviation hubs.
