Vikas Kharge Leads High-Level Review In Haryana As Maharashtra-Haryana Joint Project Nears Takeoff

New Delhi, June 26 – The land acquisition process for the much-anticipated Panipat Shaurya Smarak (War Memorial) has entered its final stage, with both Maharashtra and Haryana Chief Ministers expected to attend the groundbreaking (bhoomi pujan) on Shaurya Diwas. This update was confirmed by Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Kharge of Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs Department, following a high-level review in Panipat.

During his visit, Kharge inspected the proposed memorial site and held a detailed review meeting at the Panipat Collectorate. He was accompanied by senior officials including Panipat District Collector Virendra Dahiya, Additional DC Dr. Pankaj Yadav, Haryana Information Department’s R.S. Sangwa, Maharashtra’s Archaeology Director Dr. Tejas Garge, MTDC Superintendent Engineer Shailendra Borse, and key trustees from the Shaurya Smarak Trust.

Currently, 7 acres have been secured for the memorial, while acquisition of an additional 9 acres is in its final stage under Haryana’s Information, Public Relations, and Languages Department. This process is expected to be completed within three weeks, after which a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared by a designated architectural consultant. Construction will begin only after full compliance and statutory approvals.

The Panipat War Memorial was envisioned by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who first announced the plan during the Shaurya Diwas event on January 14, 2025. It aims to honor the Maratha valor in the Third Battle of Panipat, with a grand statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and an immersive exhibit chronicling Maratha military history.

Kharge noted that this joint initiative by Maharashtra and Haryana governments will transform Panipat into not just a heritage site but a major national and international tourist destination. The district administration of Panipat is actively spearheading coordination and fast-tracking clearances to ensure the memorial is completed on schedule.

As part of his visit, Kharge also toured the Panipat Museum, which features exhibits on the three historic battles of Panipat, and paid a visit to the Bhavani Temple, believed to have origins linked to the Third Battle.
