Virar MLA Proposes Inland Water Transport To Ease Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway Congestion
Vilas Tare inspects Virar-Safale coastline for waterway solutions amid rising traffic woes on NH-48
Amid escalating traffic snarls on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad National Highway 48, Virar MLA Vilas Tare has initiated a serious review of inland water transport (IWT) as an alternative connectivity option. On-site inspections were conducted in the Virar-Safale coastal region, where Tare evaluated the potential of launching water-based passenger and cargo movement to alleviate pressure on the heavily burdened highway.
The inspection tour included key maritime locations such as fishing hamlets, beachfronts, and possible jetty construction sites. Local representatives from the fishing community and citizens accompanied the MLA during the visit. “The volume of freight and vehicular traffic on NH-48 is growing unsustainably. This water transport proposal could offer a viable alternative to road congestion,” said Tare.
He further stressed that the state would collaborate with the Maharashtra Maritime Board, Port Department, and other technical institutions to prepare a feasibility and impact report. The envisioned outcomes include reductions in travel time, fuel savings, and reduced traffic load on NH-48. Moreover, it promises eco-friendly commuting, boosted tourism, and new employment avenues for local fishermen through transport services and jetty management.
“Leadership means offering solutions, not just highlighting problems,” Tare remarked. “Water transport is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for the future, and we must act fast.”
Key participants in the visit included Raj Sonawane, a ferry operator, and local residents from Marambalpada and Jalsar villages.
