Maharashtra Government Directs SRA To Conduct Survey, Rehabilitate Evicted Families

The Maharashtra Government has instructed the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to conduct a detailed survey of slums located along the Sion-Panvel Highway in Mankhurd, with the objective of rehabilitating affected residents under state guidelines.

Minister Shivendrasingh Raje Bhosale, who holds the Public Works (excluding Public Undertakings) portfolio, made the announcement following a citizens’ grievance meeting held at the Vidhan Bhavan. The minister confirmed that several unauthorized hutments and small structures had been recently evicted in the interest of highway safety and traffic management. However, he added that the government is committed to ensuring justice to displaced families, many of whom have been residing in the area for decades.

The survey, to be conducted by SRA, will form the basis for determining eligibility and initiating formal rehabilitation processes. The minister assured that the rehabilitation would be carried out as per state resettlement and rehabilitation policy, ensuring rightful access to shelter for urban poor and affected communities.

Local MLA Sana Malik Shaikh and senior officials from the PWD and Urban Development Department attended the review meeting. The action follows growing concerns over urban eviction without resettlement, particularly in infrastructure-heavy zones like Mumbai.
